This report was written hurriedly after he had delivered a message from Governor Dinwiddie of Virginia to the French commander in the Ohio Valley. Modest about his first effort as an author, Washington apologized at the beginning of the journal for its "numberless Imperfections" and thought it would have no more than a cursory reading. In this he was wrong. It was widely read and quoted even within weeks of publication. It continues to be read for its description of the blunt realities of frontier diplomacy in colonial America, and as a record of the first critical test of Washington's qualifications for public service.« less
