 My June 2011 Reading List:

Finished -

  1. "WHERE THE HEART IS" by Billie Letts (A) Talk about unlucky sevens. An hour ago, seventeen-year-old, seven months pregnant Novalee Nation was heading for California with her boyfriend. Now she finds herself stranded at a Wal-Mart in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, with just $7.77 in change. But Novalee is about to discover hidden treasures in this small Southwest town - a group of down-to-earth, deeply caring people willing to help a homeless, jobless girl living secretly in a Wal-Mart. From Bible-thumping blue-haired Sister Thelma Husband to eccentric librarian Forney Hull, who loves Novalee more than she loves herself, they are about to take her on a moving, funny and unforgettable journey to...where the heart is.
  2. "THE BEST OF FRIENDS" by Susan Mallery (unabridged Audio CD) (A+) In high school, studious Jayne Scott and wild child Rebecca Worden became unlikely best friends - a tie that endured even after Rebecca fled her family to live overseas. After Jayne's mother passed away, she became part unpaid assistant, part surrogate daughter to the wealthy Wordens. But now, ten years later, Rebecca is coming home to L.A. to cause havoc for Elizabeth, the mother who all but rejected her. And Jayne finds herself pulled deeper into the Worden's complicated family dynamics - especially when Rebecca's brother, David, returns as well. David is the man Jayne always wanted and knew she could never have. But when he gravitates toward her in spite of Elizabeth's protests, her vow to escape the family's shadow is put to the ultimate test. And as lies are shattered and true feelings exposed, Jayne must decide where loyalty ends, and love begins.
  3. "FOUR PLAY" - Pillow Talk by Maya Banks (A) Zoe Michaels may be in a committed relationship with her boyfriend, Chase, but there's no lack of heat between her and her other two roommates, Brady and Tate. After all, the three guys are all firefighters. Her Fantasy Men by Shayla Black (A) Kelsey Rena is an enigma. She's a girlie-girl who's wild for football, craves action movies and loves knocking back a cold beer with her three best friends - all male. She's a puzzle, too, when it comes to sex. These are three hot guys always ready and within reach, but she never seems interested. So who is the lucky mystery man satisfying this girl of their secret dreams? The three pals plan to find out. And when they do, they'll see a side of Kelsey they've only dared to fantasize about.
  4. "GET A CLUE" by Jill Shalvis (A) And you think you've had a bad day? City girl Breanne Mooreland gets left at the altar, takes the flight from hell to her honeymoon - alone - loses her luggage and ends up snowed in at a Sierra mountains lodge run by the kookiest staff this side of the Addams Family. Oh, and there's a gorgeous naked man taking a shower in her suite who says he isn't going anywhere. That's just the first 24 hours... Burned out vice cop Cooper Scott is in serious need of this vacation and he's not about to give up the only available room because an upset - okay, make that insane - woman is having a conniption fit. They'll just have to make the best of it - her side of the bed versus his. But when Cooper wakes up kissing the long, leggy Breanne, he wants to show her exactly what the honeymoon suite is intended for. But that will have to wait, because a screaming Breanne has just stumbled on a very dead body. So much for vacation...
  5. "WILD HEAT" by Bella Andre (Hot Shots #1) (A+) Addicted to risk - and to each other. Danger doesn't get any hotter than this. Maya Jackson doesn't sleep with strangers. Until the night grief sent her to the nearest bar and into the arms of the most explosive lover she's ever had. Six months later, the dedicated arson investigator is coming face-to-face with him again. Gorgeous, grinning Logan Cain. Her biggest mistake. Now her number one suspect in a string of deadly wildfires. Risking his life on a daily basis is what gets Logan up in the morning. As the leader of the elite Tahoe Pines Hotshot Crew, he won't back down from a blaze - or from beautiful, lethal Maya Jackson. She may have seduced him with her tears and her passion, but it'll be a cold day in hell before Logan lets down his guard again. But when Maya's life is threatened, his natural-born-hero instincts kick in and Logan vows to protect the woman sworn to bring him down. And as desire reignites, nothing - not the killer fire nor the killer hot on their trail - can douse the flames.
  6. "RUNNING BLIND" by Lee Child (Jack Reacher #4) (A+) Across the country women are being murdered, victims of an extraordinarily disciplined and clever killer who leaves no trace evidence, no fatal wounds, no signs of struggle and no clues to an apparent motive. Even the elite team of FBI agent assigned to the case is baffled by the ingenuity of these perfect crimes. But who's committing them? Why? And how? So far, there's only one connection: each victim knew Jack Reacher. And this time, even he's running blind.
  7. "THE MAN FROM STONE CREEK" by Linda Lael Miller (Stone Creek #1) (A) There was trouble in Haven, Arizona and Ranger Sam O'Ballivan was determined to sort it out. Badge and gun hidden, he arrived posing as the new schoolteacher and discovered his first task was to bring the rough ranchers' children under control. So he started with a call on Maddie Chancelor, the local postmistress and older sister of a young boy in firm need of discipline. It never occurred to Sam that Maddie would turn out to be a graceful woman whose prim and proper stance battled with the fire in her eyes. Working undercover to capture rustlers and train robbers was a job that had always kept him isolated and his heart firmly in check - until now. But there was something about the postmistress that had him unwittingly tempted to start down a path he'd sworn he'd never travel.
  8. "THE SEANCE" by Heather Graham (Harrison Investigations) (A+) A chill falls over Christina Hardy's housewarming party when talk turns to a recent murder that has all the hallmarks of the so-called "Interstate Killer" murders from fifteen years before. To lighten the mood, the guests drag out an old Ouija board for a little spooky fun...and that's when things become truly terrifying. Summoned by the Ouija board, the restless spirit of Beau Kidd, the lead detective - and chief suspect - on the original case, seeks Christina's help: the latest killing isn't a copycat crime and he wants his name cleared. Back in the real world, cop-turned-writer Jed Braden is skeptical of Christina's ghostly encounters, but his police sources confirm all the intimate details of the case - her otherworldly source is reliable and the body count is growing. The spirits are right. The Interstate Killer is still out there and Christina's life is hanging in the balance between this world and the next.
  9. "THE PRODIGAL" by Beverly Lewis (Abram's Daughters #4) (A) The compelling and continuing chronicle of Abram Ebersol's family, beginning in the mid-1940s, moves forward in time and scope to the late 50s. — The devout Ebersols have faced sometimes painful divisions and separations - if not geographical, those of the heart. Leah, possibly most of all, has borne losses and revelations that would have undone another whose faith was not firmly established in the God her beloved mother knew so fervently. Leah also has endured the ultimate test of her fortitude, the unexpected return of her shunned sister, Sadie, and the renewed sense of betrayal that arrives home with her. But since the close of The Sacrifice, Leah has occupied her heart and hands with the overseeing of the Ebersol Cottage and the raising of her motherless younger siblings. This includes vivacious Lydiann, who has arrived at the traditional rumschpringe, the time for testing her wings and her willingness to commit to the Old Ways. Will she take the sorrowful path of her older sister Sadie, or will Mamma Leah's good judgment guide Lydiann safely to her baptismal covenant?
  10. "24 HOURS" by Greg Iles (abridged Audio Cassette) (A++) 24 Hours begins with the perfect family. On the perfect day. About to become trapped in the perfect drime. Will Jennings is a successful young doctor in Jackson, Mississippi, with his whole life ahead of him. He has a thriving practice, a beautiful wife and a young daughter he loves beyond measure. But Will and his family are being watched by a con man and a psychopath. A man who has crafted the unbeatable crime. A man who has never been caught and whose victims have never talked to the police. A man whose life's work strikes at the heart of every family's nightmare: the unstoppable kidnapping. But this man has never met Will and Karen Jennings.
  11. "HOT FLASH HOLIDAYS" by Nancy Thayer (Hot Flash Club #3) (A) When the Hot Flash friends gather at the spa to trim the Christmas tree, they share steaming mugs of hot chocolate, a few laughs and a vow to make this holiday one to remember. And it is - but not in the cheerful, ho-ho-ho way they expected. Instead, Christmas brings family conflicts, household accidents, plane delays - and that's just the beginning. After a hazardous holiday season, the women make resolutions that they intend to keep...in a perfect world. But life - and their friends and relatives - cause complications. Shirley lends financial support to her boyfriend's schemes, which infuriates Alice, whose own son commits an act she's not sure she can accept. Marilyn travels to Scotland and falls in love, but her octogenarian mother needs her at home. And when Polly and Faye find themselves pitted against each other by a younger woman, can they overcome this clash to make a new entrepreneurial dream come true? Then real disaster strikes, bringing new challenges and surprising revelations. Just as every month of the year throws new problems at us all, so too does the end of the year give us a chance to reunite and put their put these problems into their proper perspective. And when the Hot Flash Five get together for the holidays, we should expect nothing less than the unexpected.
  12. "RENEGADE" by Lora Leigh (Elite Ops #5) (A) One Elite Ops agent is on a special assignment involving a beautiful woman. But his involvement is about to go beyond the call of duty and into the realm of dangerous desire. A high-risk mission. As a bridal shop owner, Mikayla Martin helps make women's wedding dreams come true. Her own life, however, has become a nightmare since she witnessed a nurder and got an up-close-and-personal look at the killer. What's worse: She knows she knows him. But the police, after doing an alibi check, don't believe her. It's up to Mikayla to prove them wrong and do whatever it takes to solve the murder by herself. A to-die-for-passion. Elite Ops agent Nikolai Steele, code name Renegade, is asked to pay an old comrade a favor. This friend swears he's no killer and Nik believes him, even though he's been mistaken as one by Mikayla. So Nik goes to set her straight...but the moment he lays eyes on the fiery and determined beauty, he knows he's in too deep. A woman this irresistible canonly mean trouble and, sure enough, after sticking her nose in one too many places, someone wants Mikayla dead. Now Nik must find a way to keep her safe, clear his friend's name and find the real killer, who remains on the loose.
  13. "QUADE'S BABIES" by Brenda Jackson (The Westmorelands) (B+) Oh, baby...baby...baby? Quade Westmoreland's one-night love with Cheyenne had branded him body and soul, but he'd never even learned her last name. Almost a year later, driven by memories and one incriminating photo, the sexy operative had finally tracked her down - and discovered three little babies bearing his features. Learning he was a father made Quade even more determined: he would claim Cheyenne Steele in every way. Shockingly, the irresistible beauty seemed intent on resisting him. But the Westmoreland destiny was at stake and Quade would fight for what was his.
  14. "CALL OF THE WOLF" by Madelaine Montague (A+) Abigail Winthrope was having a hard enough time adjusting to her new identity without the complication of discovering she'd landed next door to a pack of men that looked like they'd gathered for a male model convention. She couldn't afford to become involved with any of the locals - be they ever so attractive - and considering her last disastrous relationship, she really wasn't interested - especially when she discovered the men gathered at the bed and breakfast next door for the Harvest Moon Festival all belonged to a motorcycle gang. She'd had enough experience with gangs and cops for a lifetime, Seth Banner, Cameron Fontaine, Adrian Paulson and Jerico Collins aren't simply irresistible, however. From the moment she falls under their "radar", they seem to be laboring under the belief that she belongs to them.
  15. "SMART AND SEXY" by Jill Shalvis (Sky High Air #2 (A) Noah Fisher has worked for months to make Sky High the most prestigious charter airline in California. He's long overdue for a break - something involving ski slopes, cold beers and hot ski bunny babes, not necessarily in that order. The itinerary doesn't include being hijacked by Bailey Sinclair, gorgeous widow of one of Sky High's wealthiest (ex-) clients. But here they are and being crammed in a cockpit with the scared, stubborn, unbelievably sexy former model he's been fantasizing about invokes Superman tendencies that could get Noah in serious trouble. Bailey is desperate to find the stash of money hidden by her conniving, thieving late husband - before the bad guys he owed find her. It's a long shot, but nothing compared to the gamble whe's taking by being so close to Noah. Every minute in his company has Bailey thinking about doing crazy, reckless things like touching, grabbing, kissing...and oh wow, being kissed right back. Suddenly, seat-of-your pants seems like the only way to fly and maybe it's the altitude playing tricks, but this is one trip she never wants to end.
  16. "SHADOWS FROM THE PAST" by Ashley Dawn (C-) "...It is the price you pay for choosing to be a cop. Your brother's life..." Those words haunt her dreams and her waking moments. LAPD officer, Aurora Kavvan cannot rest until she finds her brother's killer. Digging into the past always brings back unpleasant things: memories, guilt...a hit man. Now she is in a race against time to find the murderer before he finds her. "Kill her. I don't care how and I don't care where, but I want her dead now!" Someone was trying to kill his dead partner's sister. FBI agent, Jordan Reiley, will stop at nothing to protect the woman he loves. Even if it means going against her wishes; putting himself between her and the man who murdered her brother. Will God keep them alive long enough for them to find the truth?
  17. "BEAUTIFUL BOY: A FATHER'S JOURNEY THROUGH HIS SON'S ADDICTION" by David Sheff (A+) What had happened to my beautiful boy? To our family? What did I do wrong? Those are the wrenching questions that haunted every moment of David Sheff's journey through his son Nic's addiction to drugs and tentative steps toward recovery. Before Nic Sheff became addicted to crystal meth, he was a charming boy, joyous and funny, a varsity athlete and honor student adored by his two younger siblings. After meth, he was a trembling wraith who lied, stole and lived on the streets. David Sheff traces the first warning signs: the denial, the three a.m. phone calls - is it Nic? the police? the hospital? His preoccupation with Nic became an addiction in itself and the obsessive worry and stress took a tremendous toll. But as a journalist, he instinctively researched every avenue of treatment that might save his son and refused to give up on Nic.
  18. "A THOUSAND TOMORROWS" by Karen Kingsbury (Cody Gunner #1) (A) Love found them in a way that it seldom finds anyone. A talented cowboy, angry and isolated. A mysterious woman with a secret. The two are national champions, top of their game, alone and intent on staying that way. How could they know what would happen when their two worlds meet? And what fears must they face if together they ignite a love that burns brighter than both of them?
  19. "XXX MARKS THE SPOT" by Kathleen Lawless (B) Springing for an impromptu getaway with her two best girlfriends wasn't entirely a selfless act on Kennedy James's part. Sure, she wanted to help Lisa get over her cheating ex-husband and Justine to quit obsessing about the ticking of her biological clock. But Kennedy had her own raging libido in mind when she booked their trip to a southeast coast golf resort. What could be more fun than a week in a beach paradise surrounded by wealthy, eligible and smokingly sexy men? What about an X-rated scavenger hunt? Kennedy's cooked up a checklist to die for: Your date's boxers...Sex in a limo...Skinny-dipping with him...A shooter he slurps from your belly button...and more wickedly erotic adventures sure to blissfully obliterate their heartaches back home in Seattle. The first one among their try-anything trio to complete the list is the winner - but in sexcapades this uninhibited, you just might bag a prize even bigger and more irresistible than you ever dreamed...with a lover who knows just the right spot for unleashing sensations not even these daring huntresses have experienced.
  20. "DEMON'S KISS" by Maggie Shayne (Wings in the Night #1) (A) Seth is new to immortality, but he's sharp and strong - and he'll risk anything for the rougues' strange female captive, a secretive creature he doesn't understand but feels compelled to save. Vixen is confused by the emotions that swirl through her at the sight of her impulsive hero. She only hopes the brutal Gregor and his bloodthirsty renegades will leave her alive long enough to explore them. Or will Reaper himself be the one to destroy them all?

I am just a few pages from finishing Wuthering Heights -- and I am loving it.  The characters and storyline are completely different than I expected.  In fact, I was afraid to pick it up until I recently saw others praising it in another thread here at PBS.  So I had to take a chance to see what all the great fuss was about.  So glad I did!!

My TBR list is really long this month with lots of, new for me, authors. Don't know how many I'll actually get read, but we'll see......

A Trouble of Fools by Linda Barnes --- An interesting read from an author I'd never read before. Well-plotted, entertaining main character in Carlotta Carlyle, ex-cop turned PI. I'll look for more of Barnes' books.

Shem Creek by Dorothea Benton Frank--- after that

A Week From Sunday by Dorothy Garlock

The Sum of All Fears by Tom Clancy --- I just couldn't get into this book right now so it will be put back on the shelf for long, cold winter days!!

The Horesman's Daughter by Susan Wiggs --- I don't, as a rule, read historical romances, but this one drew me in.  Susan Wiggs has a flair for telling a story that makes you believe in the people she's writing about. Eliza Flyte is charming, Hunter Calhoun can't resist her.... Excellent book, I'd read A Summer Affair several years ago, just now realized it's a sequel to this one.

Live at 10:00, Dead at 10:15 by Elsa Klensch

Sweet Dreams at the Goodnight Motel by Curtiss Ann Matlock --- I loved this book!!  Matlock has a wonderful way of developing her characters with insight and humor.  She's a joy to read.

See Jane Score by Rachel Gibson

Bimbos of the Death Sun by Sharyn McCrumb --- in reserve

Kansas Troubles by Earlene Fowler --- Fowler's Bennie Harper series is always a fun, easy read with enough mystery to keep the reader guessing. This one takes Bennie and her husbnd, Gabe, out of their familar home area of San Celina, CA to his former home in Kansas. Interesting characters, good plot.

Welcome to Serenity by Sherryl Woods ---reading, too

Welcome to the Great Mysterious by Lorna Landvik

The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver --- What a wonderful book!!  I had read Pigs in Heaven a couple years ago, not realizing this book came first. Even so it was well-worth reading this book because it gave the background for Pigs.... If you get the chance read them in order!! Kingsolver at her very best.

Orchid Beach by Stuart Woods --- My first Stuart Woods book and I'm hooked!!  Excellent plot, loved Holly Barker, one smart lady cop. I've got more of his books with Holly as the main character, going to enjoy them all.

Such Devoted Sisters by Eileen Goudge --- It took much too long to finish this book.  I couldn't feel any empathy for the two sisters, too much time spent yearning for what they were too stubborn or selfish [or something] to go after, then spent too much time wishing they had. Made me want to shake them both and say"Grow up!!" Also, too much detail about all the different kinds of chocolate candy, cakes, cookies, bon bons, truffles and endless details on how they were all made. I love chocolate, but even I was getting tired of hearing about it. Why did I finish the book? I was too stubborn to quit without seeing if they finally got their acts together, which they did in the last chapter and the epilogue!!

Taking Chances by Janelle Taylor

Shiny Water by Anna Salter

Killing Critics by Carol O'Connell --- also reading

Bleachers by John Grisham

Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters

The Elusive Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman --- waiting in the wings

A Cold Day for Murder by Dana Stabenow --- Excellent book, well-plotted, interesting characters. I learned alot about Alaska and the native Aleuts. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.

For the Sake of Elena by Elizabeth George

Blood Brothers by Nora Roberts --- reading now

Kat's Cradle by Karen Kijewski ---up next

Larceny and Old Lace by Tamar Myers--- A fun, witty read. This will be a series I'll enjoy reading.  Looking forward to the rest of the books.

Kill the Messenger by Tami Hoag

Almost Paradise by Susan Isaacs

Bahamarama by Bob Morris

New Authors This Month:  Bob Morris,    Tamar Myers,   Dana Stabenow,   Stuart Woods,  Anna Salter,   Rachel Gibson,   Linda Barnes,

Elsa Klensch

Just finished Skeletons on the Zaraha by Dean King.  Ficionalized true account of a shipwreck crew's enslavement by nomadic tribesmen in the Sahara desert.  Pretty facinating.  When they were finally ransomed and rescued, they weighed 40 to 90 pounds after less than a year in the desert.  Not a novel, but the fictionalized part is conversations and such.  Very well done.

Currently, it's Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters - what a scream!

Any book that has the words "tentacle snot" within the first 50 pages is a winner!
