A lass stood gazing, gazing forth, Hard by the old pier-stair. And the sunset glow from the wave below Lived in her wealth of hair :— Praying, a-praying, Well-a-day ! the sweet maid stood a-praying. The boat went sailing, sailing down, And hull, and sail, and spar, Ere the day was run, 'gainst the broad red sun Loomed black and clear afar :— Dying, a-dying, Alack ! the sweet day lay a-dying. And the lass stood watching, watching there, Till the lingering day did die, And the moon did grow, while the sunset glow Was fading out of the sky :— Fading, a-fading, Well-a-day ! the sweet light was a-fading. A spirit rose sighing, sighing aloft, She breathed the waters o'er With a sob, the wild Death of the Tempest's breath, And the mist-shroud over the shore :— Wailing, a-wailing, The dead men's souls were a-wailing. The boat was battling, battling with The pitiless ocean there, And the maid strained her sight, through the gloom of night, And rent her soul with prayer :— Breaking, a-breaking, Two lovers hearts were a-breaking. And one was fighting, fighting the waves, Out in the tempest's gloom, A nd one did pray her young life away Alone in her cheerless room :— Dying, a-dying, Mary, Mother ! two souls are a-dying.
