Whenever I read a Kate Shugak mystery, it's like catching up with an old friend. I love the cast of characters and her obvious love of the Alaskan wilderness.

I love this series. Don't miss one--life in Alaska as we will never know it who only visit.

Takes a while to get going. I liked the look at the politics of salmon fishing, although these days I expect it's a lot worse. The mystery is fine, not much of a puzzler after the first half or so, but I like watching Kate track down clues.

It's fishing season and the meanest fisherman hated by everyone is murdered. When Kate tries to find out whodunit, the killer tries for her too. Issues of subsistence vs. commercial fishing interests liven up the story, and Stabenow further develops the character of Jack's son Johnny.
