Congrats on your new Fire HD. That is awesome. Good price on the cord, too. I would like one of those, can't afford one right now.

I see Best Buy is going to have the $30 gift card with purchase for the Fire and the Fire HD on Black Friday. I was hoping they would do $50. I'll just wait. I bet no one is evey buying the cheaper Fire. I'd like to get one for about $99. It will go that low, eventually. I think. They'll be trying to get rid of them.

Anne  You can get Fire 2nd gen for $130 at Radio Shack.    The Org Fire is no longer being sold to my understanding [gen 1]  2nd has a Lot of improvements!  I was tempted to go with it but No HDMI Tv hookup LOL  No Camera & only 8 gig.... Sooo tempting!   Radio Shack was great they took out 2 Real Kindle for me to look at...not demos!   For some reason when holding the KF  I felt nothing but the HD was like Take Me Take Me hehehe

I know the HD is better, with more memory, but even the other one is better than the first gen Fire. Problem is, I don't really need either one LOL. $130 is a good price but I need to go cheaper to justify it to myself :) Though a non-Amazon android tablet would maybe be better. I was hoping for a $99 Nexus but it doesn't seem to be heading in that direction. I don't want any of the cheapy off-brands, though. I'll just bide my time....

On your Fire HD there should be somewhere in the settings where you can check "allow applications from other sources." Check that, and go to getjar.com and download the getjar app to the Fire. Then you can get some apps that aren't in the Kindle store. I suggest Aldiko and sugarsync. With those two, you can add epubs to your Fire wirelessly, import them into Aldiko, and read them there, and the books you read in Aldiko won't clutter up your carousel.

LOL I just spent 30 mins deleting all but current ebooks & 2 movies from the carousel!  I put the ebooks on as Mobi those that were not in my Kindle account. .. Thru Calibre!
What I like to know is What the heck am I doing wrong on my Movies.... Dang if I hadnt had to re-download them!  Thought they stayed once loaded unless I delete them...ugh

Some good deals out there. However, a lot of us got our Fires from Amazon free and accessories and book and movies and music.  H decided he wants my fire for his birthday, so I am getting Kindle Fire HD 7", Dolby Audio, Dual-Band Wi-Fi, 32 GB - Includes Special Offers for free.  Plus warranty and supercharger.. And I got a free app that allows me to make more Amazon giftcard money each day.

I know people hate the free offers, but I love them. You can get a lot of free digital credit that way, as well as on Amazon local deals. I have gotten all my music free with deals.

Awesome, Susan! That is a lot of space!

Barbara, good to know! I took my original Fire in the car today. I was reading on the Mantano Lite app, and it worked fine in sun! I was really surprised!

My Fire has always worked well in the sun for me, but I have a reading problem and black on white is glaring. I use white on black, instead.  I love, love, love my Fire and the new one solves some of my problems...It has the volume on the outside, Yay!!! I use the Pandora app at the gym and it drives me crazy to have to stop each time and change volume. Fine with the audio now and have speakers if necessary, but the Dolby sounds great. fine with pic, but HD is good. Dual band wifi, CAMERA!!!!,  11 hour battery, xray for books and movies, text to voice, I am excited to get it.

My fire was a blessing when I was hospitalized twice thice summer and traveling. I have a jacket with an inside pocket for a perfect fit and use it for the gym with wireless headphones.

sorry.

I got the Fire with amazon giftcards that I got elsewhere.  I am not allowed by PBS to mention anymore, but many of us have and we have our own forum. PBS decided that having us offer the information, (with no benefit to ourselves this info (one can benefit, but most of us chose not too)) was too exploitative of other members. I agree and disagree about that, but I adhere to the rules. So far this month, I have made $45 in giftcards from amazon and am about to close on some more.

I also do trade-ins. A lot of time, if you have a popular items, too popular to swap and not worth much selling, you can do trade-ins for amazon giftcards. I average about $20 a month. Non-fiction does better than fiction and dvds and cds can do very well. go through you shelves if stuff is just  gathering dust. You'll (hopefully) be happy. Shipping is free through UPS and USPS.

I am just a cheapskate. I can't pay for what I can get free.

That Fire HD is tempting. I'd rather buy a Nexus though....it would be way better than my dual-boot Nook Color on the google apps. Maybe next year...

I have and use:

2 Kindle Keyboards (1 wifi, 1 3G)(the poor wifi one, Legolas, doesn't get used much. I use the 3G one, Aragorn, every day, Calibre sends my news to it)

1 Kindle Paperwhite (wifi) - Galadriel

1 Kindle Fire (1st gen) - Dragos Fire

2 Sony T1's

My kids have a Nook Color (booted to android at all times) and I got my daughter an Aluratek Libre Color, which she hasn't used at all the last few months, so I may be selling it

I keep duplicates so that I have a backup in case one breaks. That isn't why acquired the duplicates, but that is why I keep them. And they all serve different purposes. For the most part, I have different genres on different readers.

That's a lot of ereaders for genres and backups and a lot of money tied into those. I think I'll stick with my plan of flash drive and Calibre and if the PC breaks, reload from flash drive and if the ereader breaks, buy a new one and reload from ADE and Calibre. You can buy a lot of flash drives for the price of an ereader.

On the other hand, the boy (who doesn't read and never has) has all of a sudden gotten into some reading over the last two years now that his interest matches maturity. He prefers adult non-fiction. He decided he wanted a Kindle and wanted the basic ol' model. DH told me to get him a Fire, that he would really prefer that. So he opens the Fire and was disappointed. We went back to Best Buy the next day and traded. Saved me $130!

Well I am a bit obsessed with my ereaders....and the most I ever paid for one was $139. And these purchases were spread out over 2 years. I had other ereaders before that, which I sold.
