I have a first generation Fire and wonder if it can read Adobe epub books? My library has quite of few of books in this format when they first come out. I already have Overdrive. Can I use that to read the Adobe books? I'm not very computer literate for this kind of stuff.

The native format for Kindle devices is "mobi".  Get the Calibre E-Book Management tool , convert the epub to mobi and you're good to go.

the libraries now have the books in kindle format.  At first they didn't.... and they try to make it difficult by not allowing wireless delivery, but it is still pretty easy.  And easier than what they put you thru with the epub books.  you might find a few books that only have epub, but most are available in both formats.

I do not have a fire... but since it is a tablet, I assume there is an app somewhere that lets you use epubs on it.

I get a lot of Kindle books from the library, but I'm sometimes interested in the epub as they come out first before Kindle format.

I'm not sure you can borrow a book, take it into Calibre and change the format. It has to go back to the library. Again, don't understand that stuff.

Mary-

I understand your computer literacy issues.  If on the off chance you want to explore how its possible to read the books on your Fire; here is one of the better explanations available in the aether.

you could also try asking the question on mobileread.com in their kindle fire forum.  there are likely to be some folks there who use it.

I've removed mine as I'm told the link suggests the same method.  Plus I do not want to actually tell how to break DRM on a public forum.  Very fuzzy legal issue.  This is also why Calibre requires you to use a third person add on to remove the DRM with their app.

Got your answer!

Straight from Amazon itself,

Over the past year, I have become a constant patron of my library's digital media collection, but one big issue frequently frustrated me. Many books in their collection are not offered in Kindle format, only OverDrive READ or Adobe ePub. I could find no information on Amazon about this issue, and I turned to my IT-expert husband to help me figure this out. After the two of us did some Internet research on the subject, I was relieved when we discovered the existence of this OverDrive Media Console (ODMC) app for Kindle devices.

This is how to download this app on a Kindle Fire:

So, follow the link and it will take you to the Amazon website spot to download the correct app for the first generation Kindle and then  scroll down to the post above and they give directions for installation. let us know how that works.

Okay, thanks for the help and tips.

I have Overdrive already and use it get the Kindle library books. I wasn't aware it can do Adobe ePub books. Boy, I need to get a brain and learn the formats items use.

Emily E.-

That's the process outlined in the link I provided above.
