It is an interesting book on the development of fringe religious groups after the second great awakening. It reads in some parts like the penny press that covered the lives and trials of the people involved. It is also the only history book that I know of with a surprise ending.

An interesting read, if somewhat dry. The subject matter is fascinating in its look at the power of the "Penny Press" on politics, religious fervor, and the social behavior of the times. Is our press today doing any differently? Take a look into this book and see for yourself.
