My daughters tease me about certain little things I do as regards the kitchen.  They seem to think it's hilarious that there is (almost) ALWAYS a jar of pickled beets in the fridge,especially since one of them HATES pickled beets,  One of my granddaughters found it amusing that the "care" packages I would take her at college would (almost) ALWAYS contain a half-dozen hard-boiled eggs.  Well, what's a fond grandmother to do when a kid decides to be a vegetarian?  Not only that, but she persuaded her younger sister to do likewise.

Husband being the son  of an immigrant Swede, I have to have a jar of pickled herring in the fridge a lot ot the time.   At least, now that he has his own bread machine, he makes his own limpa (sweet Swedish rye bread) and is no longer dependent on his older daughter finding time to bake a batch.

I bet I'm not at all unusual in having a chocolate stash---everyone in my family knows my dictum as to that:  "Each day should include a little Mozart and a little chocolate."   Nowadays I don't even have to HIDE the chocolate---they KNOW it's semi-sacrosanct.  But they also know that I'm not selfish with it-----I SHARE it all around.

In my fridge are at least a half-dozen kinds of salad mustard . . . . .yellow, brown, Dijon, Roquefort, sweet-tart, etc.  (Once in a great while, I get a jar of champagne mustard---mmmm.)  That's because I really like to put it on or in my food, and because, this way,  the grandkids know at least one idea for a little Xmas or birthday or Mother's Day gift or for a souvenir of their travels for their grandmother.

What little idiosyncracies do your family members tease you about?

When I was pregnant with my DS (23 years ago), the smell or feel of raw meat made me sick.  I literally could not go the meat department without rushing to the restroom.  Anyway, it still squicks me out so I use rubber gloves to touch the meat.  I get teased about that all the time.

The chocolate stash makes me laugh. My mother was the same way. The thing is, she had the chocolate stash for my father and I. She had to hide it from us or we'd eat all the chocolate chips straight from the bag and there wouldn't be any for cookies. She would buy the chocolate chips 3 or 4 bags at a time, and then hide them cleverly around the kitchen. She used to keep decorative tins on top of the cupboards. One time my father must have glimpsed her hiding the bags and later knew to check the tins. He then shared the secret with me. I can't tell you how many times I had to climb up on the counter and go around the kitchen checking all the tins (there were about 10) looking for some chocolate. She never used the same tin. These days, she hides them in random drawers, under the napkins, in old cereal boxes, and any random place she can think of. She does the same with Lindt chocolate truffles, M&M's, and hershey kisses.

The only other quirk I have is where I put things in the fridge and cupboards. Eggs always go on the right side of the shelf. That's where mom always put hers. And she says that's where her mom always put them. Things like canned goods and dry goods also have to go in particular places in cupboards because that's where my mom put them. She looked at my cupboards one time and laughed because they look so much like hers, and then we laughed together when we realized they also looked like my grandmother's. Funny, the things we inherit.

I heard a funny story about traditions. A woman would cut of the ends of her ham before she baked it.  Someone asked her why she did this. She replied it was because her mother did.  She then talked to her mom and asked her why she cut of the ends of her ham and she said because her mother had.  Eventually, they asked the grandmother about this tradition and she said, "Because my pan was to small to fit the whole ham.

In 1999, we sold our house, our cars, put all our stuff in storage to move to Germany for my job. My husband was in charge of getting rid of everything, including purging the kitchen cupboards and frig. We thought we were pretty normal, but after discovering 17 bottles of open mustard, numerous bottles of vinegar, asian sauces, oils, bbq sauce, shrimp sauce, catsup, boxes of rice, pasta in all shapes and varieties, etc....

Suzanne, what a truly strange concoction you must have sent down the drain when you emptied all those bottles so as to put them in the recycling container!
