I'm trying to mark a RWAP and I'm telling the sender why. (They joined in Jan. 2009) The cover of this book  (Larger paperback) is fine except that there is a see-through circle cut-out in the middle to see  what's on the inside page below it.  The circle has torn and there is one scrape mark that could easily be a tear.  Both are close to but less than one inch (which I know is allowed).... but it's all been taped with Scotch transparent tape.  I think I remember that the tape would make it unpostable.  But I can't find it in the Help Docs and I can't find the thread that I read it in here.  Help - am I going crazy or did I dream this up?  I don't really plan to ask for my credit to be returned - I just want to keep everyone doing the "right" thing.

I would not consider it RWAP. I have never seen tape on the cover an issue unless it is covering an unpostable issue. If a tear is less than 1 in under the tape, I don't think it should be marked RWP. Scrapes that don't go all the way through the cover have been debated with many on both sides, but I *think* that a scrape is not considered a tear, either way its still less than 1inch so it wouldn't be RWAP either. I've seen members say they don't like books with tape on the cover and they felt it should be RWAP, but I've never seen the site say it wasn't allowed.

If you want a TG to check it out, see who's awake in Live Help, they might have something in their chat area that rules on it, but my opinion would that you do not have a RWAP.

Okay, I finally found a ruler and the tear is right at 1 inch.  So unpostable?

Tape is postable, IMO. It is a clear sticker, and stickers are allowed.

For rips, I think it is only unpostable if the rip is larger than 1 inch. My general thing is, if I need a ruler to tell if it is unpostable or not, I err on the postable side. I might not send it out again but I wouldn't RWAP it, either.

Ruth--

I think you're thinking of the "tape doesn't make an unpostable tear postable" issue.

Get some rest :-)

Cheers,

Catt

It's ok to tape a postable size tear to keep it from getting worse.  I'd rather have that than a giant store sticker.

Every book eventually meets it's last PBSer as a postable book and sometmes that person is going to you.  I might not have posted the book myself (unless the rest of it was really in excellent condition) but I wouldn't mark it RWP either. I would just read it, enjoy it and end it's PBS career with me.
