I recieved two books today that were supposed to have two freebies with them and there weren't any other books.  Just the two.  The only reason I ordered the two was for the two freebies.  What should I do?

Unfortunately I don't believe there is much you can do.  Are you positive you requested the items directly from the deal-offering member's shelf?  It's possible you inadvertently requested the books from another member, who simply satisfied the terms of the request as they saw them.  However, if you did order from the member who offered the free books, I don't believe you have any recourse at your disposal.  You could, of course, send them a message inquiring as to the location of the freebies, or whether the offer had been rescinded for some reason.  I don't think I would recommend comment in the thread (mind you, I'm assuming the deal was offered in the Book Bazaar; I have no idea what PBS policy is regarding deals offered in bookshelf headers.)  I believe the following information is from the Help Center (I found it in an old post of mine; I do know, however, that it is official):

Book Bazaar

  • This is the place to advertise your bookshelf and "make a deal"
    • Members often post "deals" or "bargains" in the Book Bazaar, hoping to clean out their bookshelves and earn some credits.   We do not officially support such deals (there is no credit compensation for unsatisfactory or unfulfilled swaps). (emphasis is mine)

Since the books you requested using your credits arrived, apparently in acceptable condition, according to PBS the required criteria have been met.  Beyond attempting to communicate with the Sender, or an instance of accidentally ordering from a different member, I think you might be stuck accepting that you at least got the books you requested using credits in satisfactory condition.

Were they in the same package, and from the person you made the deal with?  If so, you should contact the sender - maybe they forgot?

If the books came separately, what likely happened is that the first sender either cancelled or didn't mark the books mailed and the requests went to the next person in line.

Either way, you still should mark them received.

They were in the same package and from the person I made the deal with.  I pm'd her and asked her where the other books were.

If they were both from the person offering the deal, I would not only contact the sender, I would also contact PBS.  I think that they need to know about members who are scamming other members through Bazaar offers.

I would give them a chance to respond before I reported them as scammers. It's possible that they sent it in 2 packages.  Or that they just forgot and will send the other two.  Maybe they gave them to someone else to wrap who did it wrong.  They may have accidentally sent your 2 free books to someone else by mistake.

People do make mistakes and not every one is a scammer.

ETA: I  personally would hold off a few days before marking them received and see waht their response is first.  Let them know that if you don't hear from them with an explination, you will mark the books received but let PBS know that they didn't send the promised freebies or respond to your PM.  PBS won't get involved but at least it'll be on record if there are other complaints.  But everyone deserves a chance to make it right before automatically being called a scammer.  Not that I'm saying the OP is calling them a scammer.

"But everyone deserves a chance to make it right before automatically being called a scammer. "

I agree with this.  I've got many bargains/deals from the BB and the only *problem* was where one Sender sent my freebie book to someone else, accidentally!   She was chagrined when she received my pm, realized what she'd done & she immediately offered to make it right.

Leslie G. (Hi, girl!), I'd give the Sender a chance to respond to your pm  -- based on the reply you get, you'll know what to do.  :)

Let's repeat:

From PBS Help Center:

We do not officially support such deals (there is no credit compensation for unsatisfactory or unfulfilled swaps).

Just yesterday I received two separate packages from the same person that offered a deal.  I was surprised cause sending them separately didn't save the sender any postage.  Maybe yours are coming in more than one package also.

I'll just wait a few days to see if she answers my pm.

PBS recommends waiting a week for response in problem swaps, so that's what I would suggest at this point.

I just got a pm from someone I had offered a deal to.  When I had taken the books to my wrapping table 2 of hers fell behind and I didn't notice them.  She received the other books and sent me a pm about the missing ones, I finally found them and in the mail they went.  Some times I forget to put the free ones with the others, old age sometimes creeps up on me  lol.  She may have been  having a bad day and forgot to put them in the package. Let us know what happens

I'll make sure I do that Bertie.  She probably just forgot.  I'm not going to get all upset about it till I find out what happened.

That's very sensible of you.  :D  Sometimes a little patience goes a long way.

Everything is all straightened out.  She pm'd me and she simply forgot to put the other books in.  She was very gracious about it and even offered me another book to make up for her mistake.  Thank you all for your input.

I'm glad you gave her a chance to respond and didn't rush to assume she was a scammer as was suggested.  We all make mistakes and deserve a chance to fix them.  Glad she responded so quickly to you.

I'm glad to hear it worked out for you.  It's easy to sometimes think the worst of people when you don't see them face to face.  I've found that most people here are honest and always try to do the right thing :)

glad this worked out. I kind of figured it would. After 3 years and hundreds of transactions (including games, etc) I have yet to be 'scammed' by anyone here and never expect to happen..

not trying to dredge up this thread again but thought it might interest you to know that I did this exact same thing TODAY!!!. I had agreed to a 2/2 offer a few days ago, pulled the books, then forgot about the freebies. I was wrapping books today and wondered why these two books were not on my books to be mailed tab.So I went back and reread my PMS and sure enough, they were the freebies! so I PM'd the person and sent the freebies separately. But if I hadn't pulled them I would have forgotten about them altogether.

Just posting this to let any doubters know that honest mistakes do happen. After 50, the brain cells fade quite a bit.

I recieved the books from her.  She mailed them out right away.  There are no hard feelings on either side.  Mistakes do happen if you are human.

Great reminder that even PBS members are human and can make mistakes, and that not all deals that start out seeming sour, end up that way. Glad to hear that you two were able to work it out, and that you got your books!!! Thanks for posting the end of the story :)
