This is the fourth in the Carstairs series, about the fortunes of three sisters (Helena, Gussie and Lizzie) and their younger brother. The previous titles are an Eligible Bride, A Tempting Miss and A Logical Lady.

A Lady's Champion concerns the fortunes of Adrian Carstairs, now a young man, an Oxford scholar and a cleric. Adrian's uncle sends him to investigate suspicious hauntings at the young ladies' seminary where Miss Daphne Selwood (a poor relation turned art mistress) teaches. Adrian will act as school chaplain and work on his Herodotus thesis, while ghost hunting at night. The ghosts threaten the future of the school; parents are withdrawing their girls and the three Selwood ladies who own the seminary have their livelihoods threatened. Adrian and Daphne team up to solve the mystery amidst the freezing cold of an English winter.

Janice Bennett wrote amiable, leisurely, low key regencies with likable characters. It is not necessary to read the series in order and there are no onscreen sex scenes. A good read.
