Summary:

"Kanaki woke in the middle of the night to the sound of screaming. Her parents, the king and queen of Nubia, had been murdered. The commander of their guard named himself the new king and sent Kandaki to be sacrificed as royal food for the god of the marshes.

Chained to a column in the middle of a black lake, the princess waited alone for the dragon to arrive, when suddenly the figure swimming toward her raised its head and revealed, instead of a bloodthirsty water dragon, a young Egyptian man offering help. Kandaki is rescued and befriended by Prahotep, his friend Baki, and Hathor- the last of an extinct line of dragons (who thinks humans would taste revolting)- and the Egyptians agree to help Kandaki and the Nubians, until now their enemies.

In this dazzling sequel to Gillian Bradshaw's first novel for young readers, The Dragon and the Thief, Kandaki's courageous plan to save her people from a murderous warmonger and Hathor's search for another of her own kind involve nail-biting adventure, packed with fantasy, magic, and humor, a fearless heroine, and a lovable hero."
