The tale of a domineering father of an English family driving his sons to the world of the American West of old. The author's description of War Between the States Battle of the Wilderness is one of the best I've read as are his relationships between the Crow and Blackfeet Nations. The early days of the Missouri River town of Ft. Benton, Montana with its bull whackers, sporting "ladies", gun fights, heavy drinking, buffalo hunting, and an unsolved murder come alive by Vanderhaeghe's gifted pen. Tying all of this high adventure of the old west together is an unforgettable love affair making it a good read.

This is a very good story that is beautifully written. It brings together several very different peoplepostage post Civil War frontier when there was a brutal American wilderness to survive. Nicely done but I would recommend the unabridged version.
