"Brilliant does not even begin to describe the Shaara gift. Thank Gods and Generals that it was passed from father to son."

A good account of the Civil War from a day to day Officers view.

A satisfying conclusion to the farher-son trilogy, Shaara once again takes us into the minds of the most important of the Civil War generals. By deeply personalizing their stories, Shaara brings the war straight to the reader's heart. Anyone who loves a good story will enjoy this book, but historians will rejoice! I was moved to tears during the description of Lee's surrender to Chamberlain. My very highest recommendation.

This is both fact neatly entwined with fiction. It is a classic recount of the Civil War in Virginia following Gettysburg told from both sides of the battle. As such it ranks among such classics as Crane's The Red Badge of Courage, Churchill's The Crisis, and the non-fiction of Bruce Catton. It is a striking contrast of the two combatant armies.

If you ever wanted to get into a warrior's head, this is your book. It's like you were there with Grant, Lee, Chamberlin and the rest. It made me realize how lucky I am to have been born im 1942 rather than in time to be cannon fodder for fools(many of the generals).

First you read his father's book "The Killer Angels" then you read Jeff's book "Gods and Generals" and this book finishes the trilogy.

A sequel to The Killer Angels by the author's father, Michael Shaara. It follows Lee, Grant and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain from just after the Battle of Gettysburg to the end of the Civil War.
