This is the second Anita Blake story, my first. A fun story, very readable, a combination of vampire fantasy and detective mystery fiction that at first seems weak but will grow on you as the story progresses. It helps that Hamilton's Anita is likeable by herself.

Wikipedia has a large summary of the series. One entry begins, "Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter is a series of dark fantasy novels by Laurell K. Hamilton, narrated in first person, hard-boiled detective style by the title character, Anita Blake. Anita lives in a fictional Saint Louis much like our own, save that, not only are things like vampires and shapeshifters real, but everyone knows that they're real and they are considered citizens of America, much like normal humans. The novels follow Anita's ongoing conflicts with the supernatural as she attempts to solve a variety of supernatural mysteries, come to grips with her own abilities, and navigate an increasingly complex series of romantic and political relationships." Check it out.

This is the second installment in the Anita Blake series. It started fast and furious and it just stayed there. The book was action packed with zombies and the undead. You learned more about Anita, what she was willing and not willing to do with her talent as an animator. You also got a chance to read more about her interaction with Jean-Claude. I only wish that there was more of the mysterious Jean-Claude. Can't wait to read the next one.

This is of course, as you know, the second installment of the "Many adventures of Anita blake" :-)

Like before, Anita finds herself caught up in a little more trouble. Shoot me now, but I beleive this is only the begining of her problems since this is only book 2 of 17.

In this book Anita gets envolved with none other than...zombies, well what she beleives may be a zombie, but only reading the story will tell you exactly what is killing innocent families! A sick (not the cough-cough sort of way) crippled millionaire and a Voodoo Priest are also included.

As always its action packed with Anita always finding trouble. A little more detective work than I care for but still a great read. Vampires dont really play that big of a role in this one but of course Jean-Claude will always show his face.

I did read a review on here saying sex, sex, and more sex... which seems to be false. There are no sex scenes in this book, a little talk of it but not a big part of the story by any means.

Overall a good read.

Tha further adventures of Anita Blake, The Executioner. This one is very good, less erotic than her later novels. A good combo of mystery, a little romance, and zombie butt kicking. I helps to read these books in order, as the character relations develop along a definte timeline. Jumping back and forth can be a little confusing.

I thought the second book in the Anita Blake series was much better than the first. With several plot lines going on at the same time and non-stop action, this book will keep you in suspense. Considerably more gruesome than the first, so young readers beware.

Another great installment in the Anita Blake series (this one is #2).

Synopsis:
Harold Gaynor offers Anita Blake a million dollars to raise a 300-year-old zombie. Knowing it means a human sacrifice will be necessary, Anita turns him down. But when dead bodies start turning up, she realizes that someone else has raised Harold's zombie--and that the zombie is a killer. Anita pits her power against the zombie and the voodoo priestess who controls it.

The Laughing Corpse was even better than the first book of the Anita Blake series (Guilty Pleasures). The vampires actually take a backseat to zombies in this one but you don't have time to miss them. There are EVIL villains, scary monsters, action and big trouble for Anita in every single chapter. I couldn't put it down and can't wait to read the next installment of Anita's adventures.

Anita Blake is a great heroine. I love how the character manages to evolve yet stay strong and not act like a silly twit when a guy is concerned. She's self-reliant and knows that in the world she lives in, she just can't trust anyone. This is a great series so far, and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes stories with vampires, lycanthropes, and any other fantasy-horror creatures. The story is cleverly written with a world that is believable. Excellent read!

I've read many of Hamilton's books but started with her Merry Gentry series.

In my opinion this series; Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter is more like a feminine gum-shoe mystery series with a super natural twist.

While these books are interesting I prefer the Merry Gentry 'realm' and plot.

More Anita Blake, more Jean-Claude (my personal favorite part) along with voodoo priests, zombies, bloody murder and a much better planned out plot than the original Guilty Pleasures, in my opinion. I am so glad that I continued on with the series, as I found this second outing a much more enjoyable read. As I read over other reviews, I see that I am not the only reader that feels that way. This book is much grittier (at times to the point of nausea) but that is how I rate how good a book is, how it affects me while I am reading it. This is a definite recommended read. I will enthusiastically move on with the series.

This book and Circus of the Damned are my favorite Anita Blake books. Lots of action, mystery, intriguing characters. Hamilton is one of the reasons vampire books are so popular. She is on the dark side (as opposed to the C Harris Sookie Stackhouse or MJ Davidson Undead series, which are lighthearted and humorous).

I found this book to be very different from Guilty Pleasures. Guilty Pleasures was erotic while this books focus is on horror and crime solving. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. It was a fast read and that might in small part be due to the anticipation of the erotic part to kick in. It never did and in fact went the other direction of disturbing sexual scenerios. At least it was my opinion that they were disturbing and I consider myself to be pretty open minded. Regardless, I look forward to reading the next in the series and wonder if the next book will be a little more erotic and a lot less scary.

This is one of the many books I have read at least three times most likely more. I have a blast reading Laurell K Hamilton, her books are fun, witty, outrages and a down right blast to read. The characters are great Anita Blake, Richard Zeeman, and Jean-Claude to name only a few. This book series had also made it's presents felt in the comic book world, which is publishes by Marvel. With her own spin on vampire mythos and werewolf's and zombies and anything you can think of that comes with the supernatural world. And her vampires DO NOT SPARKLE!!!! They are sexy, scary, funny, and you remember them.

I like this book. It's the first time I picked up anything by the author and was was pleasantly suprised! Once it got past the wedding part in the beginning, I felt like a man was able to read and appreciate this book. Very graphic and gruesome. Anita Blake is a rough woman and gets the job done.

I learned more about vampires and zombies that I had ever known before. It would have been great to read book 1 in the series first, btu I will get back around to it!

I read this on thru in a day. It is alot like Guilty Pleasures. I was a little disappointed that we have not seen alot of Jean Claude yet. I am so interested in seeing how that gets to where it is today. As you can tell I read them out of order. However that does not matter. All it did was make we gobble a book a day up.

So far my least favorite in the series but ::::: A MUST READ for the series.

As I reread this series I am aware of just how much it has changed and mutated into something completely different from the original books. The Laughing Corpse is book #2 and focuses almost completely on Anita's zombie raising duties and her job helping the police on Spook Squad. This book is horribly gory and disturbing. I originally read it back before I had children and am relieved that I didn't attempt to read it when they were toddlers. That's all I'm sayin'.

In this book, Anita is called in to help with a murder investigation. A family has been attacked and it appears it is the work of some sort of up hyped up super zombie. While investigating the case Anita is being pressured to raise a long dead zombie for a million or so bucks. She refuses because she'd have to sacrifice a human in order to do so. This Anita has morals and she's sticking to them.

There is a lot of action here but way too much description when it comes to Anita's guns (snore) and attire. Seriously, are there readers out there who really care what color the "swishies" are on her many pairs of Nike's?

Jean-Claude makes a few appearances and attempts to seduce her with his other-worldly eyes and puffy shirts but this Anita still kills vamps and doesn't date them. Many characters are introduced here that I don't remember. Anita has quite a few girlfriends, sidekicks and co-workers who disappear in the later books.

Despite my complaining I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It's very morbid but has the dark-edged wit that the later books are lacking.

Blurb on back of book:

The novels of NYTimes bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton take readers into the dangerous life of Anita Blake, animator and vampire hunter - a woman as good at raising the dead as she is at slaying the unead. Now, a creature from beyond the grave is tearing a swath of murder through St. Louis. And Anita will learn that there are some secrets better left buried - and some people better off dead ...

"THEY WERE TREATING ME LIKE I WAS A VER DANGEROUS PERSON.
At five-three I am not imposing. Raise the dead, kill a few vampires, and people start considering you one of the monsters. Sometimes it hurt. But now ... it had possibilities. 'Do you really think I came in here unarmed?' I asked. My voice sounded very matter-of-fact ... 'Want to bet your life on it?' "

As an avid Buffy fan, enjoying everything from the TV show to the books and comics, I was excited to learn that Laurell K. Hamilton was creating her Anita Blake character in comic book form. Having read the first 4 comics in the series I had to get the books. This is the second book in the series and I was afraid having not read the first I would be lost in some parts, but the way the books are written you don't have to read the previous to follow along with the story line. As far as books concerning the supernatural (vampires, witches, zombies ect.) this series is quickly becoming one of my favorites. A quick and enjoyable read. With each book the characters grow along with the story line. I would recommend this book and series to anyone who has a "Guilty Pleasure" for vampire stories.
