A gifted storyteller tells the story of Elizabeth the first. The characters came alive so much that I started reading up everything I could on this fascinating woman.

An excellent, excellent period account, lightly fictionalized, which is always the very best in historical fiction, of the life of Henry VIII's second daughter, Elizabeth I. A fascinating girl and woman, who excelled at statecraft and courtly politics---this woman controlled history then, and could move mountains today. A must read for any historical fiction fan, I cannot recommend more highly.

I loved this book until I got about half-way through when it started to get really weird and just WTFish. It got into some bizarre fantasy elements and this whole "violence-is-sexy" relationship with Robert Dudley. I had to struggle to get through it as Elizabeth started acting more and more out-of-character and the whole style of writing became weirder. But the first half or so is pretty good and gives an interesting perspective on Elizabeth and makes her much easier to identify with for someone in modern times.
