The Hedge Knight - George R. R. Martin
Runner of Pern - Anne McCaffrey
and a story by Terry Goodkind that I already can't remember the name of.

The Hedge Knight is a truly well-crafted, wonderful story. The other two are fine, but pale in comparison.
