Really disappointed with this book. The "hero" (I use the term loosely) was a cad. I am still confused as to why we were supposed to root for him. He married (against his will), deflowered his wife, and then left her. Now years later, he's back in London after a life of debauchery on the Continent to find his wife is a courtesan. What really gets me is his possessiveness of her. It seems stupid and out of place. Then he forces his way into her life because she is HIS wife....anyway I hated this book.

It is rare that I don't like a romance novel, but this one ended up really disappointing me. The male hero is so terribly unlikeable that it was hard for me to wish for a happy ending.

I just want to say that if you enjoy historical romance written with heat and spice from this time period (early 1800's), don't let the negative reviews here throw you. You will be missing out on a great, well written story.

The book begins with a short prologue the night before the wedding of Victoria and Justin, Earl of Baybary's arranged marriage. A very hot wedding night follows. The story never bogs down from there.

Good characterization for the leads and everyone else. Victoria is a woman with spunk and backbone. Justin is a man with secrets that war with his mind and heart and his view of this marriage and relationship with Victoria. Consequently, the damaging secrets kill any chance at a genuine marriage and love...or do they?

But before we know for certain...

3 years pass. When something happens to send Victoria from Justins' country estate, where she has been abandoned, to London on a quest, she arrives as the beautiful courtesan, Ria.

Who does she run into? Yep, Justin, at a party for London society's shadier elite.

Adventure, danger, and did I mention smokin love scenes?

A great read. I loved the heroine. The hero needed some work. But it was a great read, with a nice ending.

I enjoy most of Ms Petersen's books. This one I found good but I felt that the ending was a little rushed and left some ends dangling. Then I got her latest and it wrapped up the dangling ends. of this one and I feel better about Lessons. In fact I went back and reread it.

i really enjoyed this book, the characters were believable and the plot was interesting. i liked that the heroine had no interest in her husband for most of the book and attempted to avoid him while she worked to find a missing girlfriend. the lack of "need" for a man in her day to day life was refreshing and this was a fun take on the wife/mistress roles
