Lessons on Liberty begins with a simple alphabet poem, written in a style that reminds me of the old McGuffey readers. Then, each letter page contains two pages of historical information symbolizing the history that letter represents. Authors Peter Lillback and Judy Mitchell (also illustrator) use three basic elements to enhance each letter page: a definition taken from Noah Websters 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language; verses from the Bible; and proverbs, sayings, etc. from Poor Richards Almanack.

The entire book contains quotes, interesting facts, and surprising bits of information. I loved the flag on each letter page and the historical content that went beyond what you typically hear about American history. In addition to American history, readers learn the significance and meaning of each fold of the flag, the symbols on a dollar bill, and even the meanings of various Judeo-Christian symbols.

The last pages of the book are just as useful, with activity pages that give a more hands-on approach to learning. The activity pages have actually been perforated for easy tear out so that they can be photocopied and used with students.

The amount of information contained within beautifully adorned 79 page book is just amazing. I would highly recommend Lessons on Liberty for any educational setting or for anyone wanting to encourage young patriots. Readers will come away with a much more thorough understanding of American history, what makes this country special, and how we can bestow greater honor on our country in the present and future by remembering the past.
