Don't start reading this, as I did, right before going in for surgery of any kind! Excellent, affecting and yet not a 'downer' as Lavender is so "matter of fact" about the medical horror of her childhood and the issues that continued to plague her. I did find it interesting that she didn't spend much time speculating about the causes, but then again, that all is beside the point of her experience.

ironically, given the subject matter (cancer, car accident, more health problems, some more cancer) this book was not nearly as depressing as the dog years one. it was actually rather empowering. more than a little unsettling, but this girl is a survivor through and through and that came out in her memoir quite beautifully.
