A staff photographer for 'The Star', one of the top men in his field, was stopped by an attractive girl on his way to a meeting to hear a speech by James Lester, the Progressive party's young, able candidate, who was hoping to be Prime Minister. The girl was Shirley Holt, a children's nurse. She asked the photographer if he might be going to see Lester after the meeting, and if so, would she give him a message for her, since the meeting was for party members only. Asked if she was a friend of Lester's, Miss Holt said, "I met him on holiday in Scotland last year, and we went swimming and sunbathing together." Her note, quickly written, was not sealed, and the photographer glanced at it during the meeting.
It opened: "Dear Jim, remember me? Shirley Holt. I got back from my travels yesterday ... Hoping to hear from you sometime. Love, Shirley."
The photographer took some pictures that evening, and two days later Linda Tandy, the young daughter of the editor-in-chief of another English paper, The Post, was shocked by a photograph in The Star which had a girl in it, under a bold heading - "Jim's Holiday Friend?" It described Shirley Holt, then ran a comment by Lester: "There must be some mistake. I'm afraid I never had the pleasure of meeting the young lady." And just below that there was a picture of Jim Lester and his late wife, with the caption "Jim Lester's wife ... died tragically after a car crash three years ago." .... Was Lester lying - or was there a real scandal in the offing?
This is a most exciting, timely, and skillful novel - and a delight to read.
