It's hard to make a character sympathetic when they kill people for $$. This character works for the Govt. and also takes independent contracts. Working for people who order 'hits' can be dangerous, and in this story he is on the wrong side of one of the major players. He, at least, does not seem to be mean spirited - he is more neutral as in he keeps emotions out of it. Then, again, he sometimes does show a little compassion which possibly makes him palatable.
