I recently sent out an ex-library book as there was no RC with this in mind. I received the following message when the book was received...The member to whom you shipped your book 'CUPCAKES' has sent you this personal message. Thank you. I think it's important for you to reveal that your books are library copies if that's what they are. There are stampings and writings on the inside cover, that is not usually accepted by PBS unless it is disclosed. This is in nice condition though. Thank you. Do I owe them an apology????? I thought ex library books were fine as long as they were marked as such themselves??? I Seee notation about cookbooks, textbooks and travel guides that you must pm ahead of time but not for this. Am I missing something??

The way I understand it, as long as your library copy meets PBS requirements, you can list it.  There's nowhere for you to note that it's a library book, as this site doesn't have descriptions of individual books.

If the recipient was that bothered by library books, then they should have had an RC stating such.

You don't owe the person an apology.  You may want to say that library books are permitted by PBS guidelines and your book did meet such guidelines, assuming it did.  Or that might start a round of back & forth that you don't want to deal with.

Thanks...that's what I thought (and read in the help documents). I did send them a nice message back stating such as their message to me was polite and they did say the book was overall nice (was actually in brand new condition...I think the library got rid of it cause no one checked it out!!!).I won't continue the conversation going back and forth but I did want to check in here for clarification incase I didn't read something correctly or missed it. There is always so much more to learn from others here even if you have been here a while and swap a lot!!!

Ex-library books are specifically allowed in the rules.

Also, all the library markings are also allowed, unless for some reason they start to obscure the text of the book (never seen it, but I suppose it could happen).

Ex-library books must also meet the other postability rules (no water damage, etc).

There is no need to PM about it before you mail the book. If book requestors are bothered by ex-library books, they must put it in a RC.

(My library does the same thing ... they get rid of books that don't get checked out, so I frequently find maybe 2 year old ex-library paperbacks that are still on Wish List here, and I often snap them up and mail them here, as they go for 25 cents. I think that other members might be surprised to receive ex-library on such recent books .... but I figure if they care, they woudl have put it in a RC.)

Yup!! I think the person didn't want a library book and thought by telling me nicely I might feel bad (which I did for a nano second). They have been here since early 2009 so it hard to believe they don't have some knowledge of the basic rules.

The only RWAPs I've had against me were people complaining that I sent them a library book...but when I pointed out that library books are allowed by PBS and that they didn't have an RC against them, they were marked resolved very quickly. I used to go to FOL sales to get a lot of books to list here, so about half my bookshelf was ex-library. A lot of them were almost brand-new looking...I suspect the reason they were removed from the shelf was that they were rarely or never checked out.

She sent me a message sayings she was wrong after all, ......so in the end no harm done and a good swap. Other member was polite and nice in her concern about the swap which isn't always the case. Because of her attitude and appropriately tempered messages, I would have no problem swapping with her again.

What Sara said yes

You are correct and the other member was mistaken.  So glad her concerns were quickly resolved without a RWAP on your account!!

Lenght of time here does not mean more familiarity with the rules.  You would think it would but it doesn't. I have received 2 truly disgusting books from PBS that just had to tossed immediately. Both were from long time members who basically told me to suck it up and not complain about books with brown liquid all over them.

When I first joined PBS, if someone ordered a book from me that was ex-library, I'd always send them a PM to let them know.  Everyone said no problem, send the book, so I finally stopped mentioning it.  Unless someone has an RC specifically saying they don't want ex-library books, I have no problem sending it, and I've only had one person mention that they were disappointed it was a library book, but they marked it received.  Glad you got it resolved quickly.  Pat

And in some cases, members who have been here longer are the worst offenders.
