Fascinating look at life from development of the first cells that formed hugh vats of algae. Fortey has a great sense of humor that keeps a potentially dry subject lively as well as informative.

Interesting subject, but the author strays too far from science (e.g. biography and philosophy, probably to make it more "readable" to the layman), for me to complete it.
