Lily's Crossing
Author: Patricia Reilly Giff
A 1997 Boston Globe Horn Book Honor Book. With Ms. Giff's usual easygoing language and swift, short paragraphs, the impact of the war on an American child is brilliantly told. With wry comedy and intense feeling, Giff gets across a strong sense of what it was like on the home front during World War II. The friendship story is beautifully drawn. ...  more »

Good book for older elementary school age. Takes place during WWII and many of the problems will be very recognizable to American children now facing problems caused by war in another country.

I was a little disappointed to find this a rather bland story and one that lacked direction, especially since it was a Newbery Honor. It felt simply like a collage of scenes pasted together of a young motherless American girl's summer during World War II, when her father is called to the war effort and she is left with a grandmother she does not get along with. She befriends her neighbor's nephew, a refugee from Hungary, who is determined to get his young sister back from France where he was forced to leave her behind when she became ill during their escape. While it showed an interesting point of view of the war, both the story and characters lacked substance to me.

Lily's blissful summer of 1944 comes to a rude halt when her father is drafted into the military. Left alone with her grandmother in the family's summer home in Rockaway, New York, Lily befriends Albert, a shy Hungarian refugee her own age. Narrator Mia Dillon convincingly conveys the emotional complexity of both children, capturing the urgency and doubt that arise from Lily's internal dialogue and providing a sensitive portrayal of Albert, complete with Hungarian accent. Albert's tentativeness and sorrow are apparent to the listener long before Lily can fully understand his painful experiences in war-torn Europe.
