M.E. Kerr has written some of the best YA novels out there. In "Linger", we see inside a small town during the Gulf War. Bobby Peel is the one Berryville's waving flags for, over there fighting in Desert Storm. Lynn Dunlinger (private-school beauty turned peacenik) is the daughter of the man who owns the fancy restaurant Linger--and she's writing to Bobby. Gary, Bobby's brother, is dodging trouble in Berryville and keeping other people's secrets. Like why Bobby walked out on his job at Linger. Like why Lynn is sneaking around behind her father's back. And Jules Raleigh is playing "God Bless America" for the Linger crowd, and teaching his high school class about blood for oil.

By the Fourth of July, Bobby's back from the Gulf. The lid's off all the secrets, and the fireworks are just beginning...

Moving story of hypocrisy, false patriotism and the true meaning of war.
