I am 30 years old and have worked in construction administration for the past decade. Two years ago I lost my job and have redefined my goals - which has led me to back to school to work on a BA in Literature with Creative & Technical writing emphasis. Anyways, since I am switching fields my advisor told me I should seek out others to help establish and build my portfolio. Anything would be helpful. I can transcribe handwritten works for writers, offer my opinions, edits, etc. If anyone is interested please let me know. My email is busydonnelly@yahoo.com I am also currently working on a few short story ideas and have a goal of writing my first novel before I graduate in 3 more years. Thanks for reading my post. Hi Jacki, You mention transcribing the work of other, but building a portfolio should consist of your own works. Keep an idea notebook handy so that when an idea hits, you can record it. Then, just start writing a lot. Your first works may not meet your own specifications, but eventually your writing will improve. Plus, school will help. |

Mary, Thanks for the response. I know my work is my portfolio, I should have made my message more clear. I am working on my own portfolio but am also trying to learn how to edit, etc. I need experience in that department so thought I would post that here. |

Writers write. You have to make yourself write because it's like any other chore -- laundry, chopping wood, etc.. I love creating characters and stories once I get in front of the computer, but it is hard to find that time to be in front of the computer. I set aside 3 hours a day usually to write. You can send me some of your writing, if you want some feedback. |
