I stopped by the local used book store today and boy, had things really changed! It is a large, two-story affair and they have always been fairly reasonable on their book prices, especially Christian fiction. There were some authors (like Karen Kingsbury) whose books were always $5-7.50 and I have no problem with that. Today, however, almost all the newer (past 2 years) Christian fiction books were $6.50-$7.50 and even ones that I saw there 2 weeks ago for $2-3 had been marked up by at least a dollar. This UBS chain does MAJOR business in our city, they are always jam-packed and you have to circle and circle to find a parking space. I am upset about how they are marking things up like this. I wonder if it is related to gas or economy or what?? I know they don't ship books in, they are local area trade-ins and such.

I think it is getting like that everywhere. I noticed that the prices on just about everything in the Goodwills and thrift shops in our area have gone up.

No doubt if they are going up on their prices that it is costing them more to do business.  Perhaps they have bought some books through another company liquidating inventories.  With fuel costs going up, even their electric bills will have increased.  As the cost to continue their business increases, they will have to raise prices to remain profitable.  You, the consumers, will tell them how high is too high when sales begin to slow down.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.  I just wish we had a great used bookstore nearby!
