It is also the story of Jonathan "Pony" Rivers, the orphaned son of a jockey, who loved horses more than anything else. Though Pony loved all horses, Little Vic was special. Pony worked at the farm where Little Vic was born. He was the first person to see the colt and , later gave Little Vic his name. Sometimes Pony felt as if he and Little Vic were brothers.
Pony's devotion to Little Vic carried him from Kentucky to Arizona to California. It carried him over seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some people laughed at Little Vic. They said Little Vic was too small and too jumpy to be a race horse. And some people sneered at Pony and said he should never be a jockey.
