Smith's writing career began in 1958 when he agreed to put together a manuscript based on interviews he had filmed for a PBS television station while at MIT. The Religions of Man, was published first in 1958 and then reissued as The World's Religions in 1991. Never one to shy away from an opportunity to experience something new, Huston continued meeting and interviewing religious mavericks and cultural figures from all areas of contemporary life, including Timothy Leary, Bill Wilson (founder of AA), Mickey Hart, Native American shamans, Zen roshis, and was even detained at the largest police station in the world.
