If you live in Washington/Warren co, New York, consider taking your old blankets to the Safe Haven animal shelter. It's on Rte 29 between Greenwich and Schuylerville. They need all kinds of things like laundry detergent, bleach, blankets, dogfood. They helped me out once by rescuing a starving stray and I do what I can to collect blankets, etc. for them.  My stray eventually recovered from his starvation and mange and was adopted out, a happy ending!
