When I was in Jr High School in the early 80's I read a book and for the life of me I have been trying to remember or find out the name of the book for many many years.

When I was in Jr High it was in the school library it was a hard back book about 6 inches by 4 inches and a little over an inch thick.  It was Orange.  Yes the details that I can remember are odd but ....  Not the name or the author.

Now about the book itself.

These people were trapped inside a building.  It must have been HUGE and a building bigger than anything we can ever think about.  They never found the sides, the top, or the bottom.  They were either going from room to room or platform to platform.  I want to say it was platforms and ladders.  It started out as one person and he (yes a he) eventually met other people both male and female.  Everyone was adults.  They eventually found a machine that spit out food.  After some time it didn't spit out as much food as it used to so the people started getting hungry and then started doing intricute routines then the machine would spit out food.  I don't know if it was the routine that did it or if the machine was just on very slow motion on giving food.

I can't remember if they ever got out of where they were or not.  Anyway I would LOVE to read this book again.  I haven't a clue who wrote it or when.  I'm sure it was also in paperback.

Since I just joined I will try to check back here but if you know of the book in addition to posting here could you please e-mail me too?  DaNel@DDMiniFarm.com

I think this may be it, I remember reading it myself and some of it is still vivid in my memory:

The House of Stairs

Yes! House of Stairs! My copy wasn't orange, but it made a huge impression on me, the dancing for the machines......

They weren't adults though - teenagers. This book comes up in "do you remember this book" forums with great regularity, it makes a tremendous impression on people.

Thank you so much everyone.  I've been looking for this book for at least 15 years.  Now to get paid and try to find one to buy.
