This book is about a boy who either goes camping or gets lost..but he has a sleeping bag, so I am guessing he went camping, he is with his dogs, there are woods, they find an abandoned farm house and sleep in it on the second floor, there may or may not be a bear scare in it...it was read by me in the mid 70s and may have been published before that, hardback, picture book, lots of brown and green hues.....HELP??

Thanks Josie... I had another person offer  up MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN, while it looks like a good book, thisi s not it.

  Nicky, if you don't get any answers here, try www.abebooks.com   They have a great section called Booksleuth and the members there are great at finding lost and forgotten books :)

As I write this there are tears running down my face.....seriously. I am sitting here in my 38yo body just weeping cuz someone on ASKVILLE was able to tell me the name of the book I have been looking for for over 20 years to share with my own kids!!!!!!!!!!!  My big kids are now 21/19 and 18 but I still have my 9yo I can read it with...and shoot...who am I kidding, this is going to be MY BOOK!!!!   

Young Christopher gets a sleeping bag and other camping equipment for his birthday. He immediately wants to sleep out, but must wait until the family takes a trip to a cabin in the country. On the way there, he sees a spot by a brook and announces that that is the spot where he will spend the night. Once they arrive at the cabin, he takes his equipment and by himself, sets out for his selected campsite, which is some distance from the cabin. In the night, it starts to rain and he decides to move. As he walks, he hears noises and sets out for an old, empty farmhouse that he has been in before with his friends.
