I'd like the book to involve  the bushwackers  or  jayhawkers or both. You know were the h/H or thier family belongs to one group or both. Sorry if that sounds confusing  but I long ago gave up the fight and  gave into the fact that I am  a confusing person LOL!!! Thanks for your imput !!!!

Have you read North and South? It is a series by John Jakes. They are more historical fiction than romance, but they do have the romantic element. They are good books but long. There are also movies based on the series. I believe Patrick Swayze was in them.

Is this at all like what you are looking for:

Book Description:

Spying for the Union army has taken a heavy toll on Gabriel Laniere. With deception a constant in his life, he can't allow himself to get close to anyone - not even God. Yet Camilla Beaumont, daughter of the Confederacy, just might be the exception. Camilla has a dangerous secret that rivals Gabriel's ... and the unlikely partnership they forge could be the key Gabriel seeks to a soul-shaking truth larger than any conflict - love.

The book is REDEEMING GABRIEL by Elizabeth White.  It is a Steeple Hill Love Inspired Historical (#20)

I would suggest The Rebel Lover.  I don't remember the author, sorry!  It starts with the Battle of Gettysburg, and a wife and daughter find a Southerner in their basement who's been shot.  The wife is originally from the South (North Carolina?) and I think the man is a distant relative.  They end up needing to head to his home and I believe they are followed most of the way by a bounty hunter -esque man.  It was a really good book, but I don't still own it...

Try Heather Graham - she has a set of 3 books set in the Civil War, that include what your looking for.  Very good series - I really enjoyed them.  It starts with http://www.paperbackswap.com/book/details/9780373835164-Dark+Stranger

Best post -civil war books ever are Texas Destiny &  Always to Remember by Lorraine Heath.  They do, however, refer back to scenes quite often of during the war, too.
