Grade 4-7 Auch takes the common theme of a child feeling unloved and insecure when a new baby arrives and infuses new life into it through snappy dialogue, on-target humor, and insight into how kids feel. Cat, an adopted 11 year old, has been an only child all of her life, and enjoyed the privileges that it holds: ballet lessons, a room of her own, and her parents' complete attention. She is thrilled when her mother becomes pregnant, but neither she nor her parents realize how their lives will change when her mother delivers quadruplets. Characters are well defined, from Cat's frazzled and seemingly insensitive parents to Cat and her best friend, Noreen. Some scenes are vividly drawn and very funny; others are emotionally charged and moving, particularly when Cat and her parents finally talk about their feelings and when the smallest of the quadruplets dies. While the episode in which the two girls run away to try to join a carnival is somewhat contrived, those scenes in which Cat and her parents cope with three crying babies are hilarious. All in all, this is a positive and upbeat story that is sure to find a large readership. Trev Jones, ``School Library Journal ''
