Griffins lounged all around them, inscrutable as cats, brazen as summer. They turned their heads to look at Kes out of fierce, inhuman eyes. Little ever happens in the quiet villages of peaceful Feierabiand. The course of Kes' life seems set: she'll grow up to be an herb-woman and healer for the village of Minas Ford, never quite fitting in but always more or less accepted. And she's content with that path -- or she thinks she is. Until the day the griffins come down from the mountains, bringing with them the fiery wind of their desert and a desperate need for a healer. But what the griffins need is a healer who is not quite human ... or a healer who can be made into something not quite human.

A delightful new take on Griffins as magical creatures; darn good sword and sorcery. This is the first book of a trilogy, and I've already requested the next two!

From back cover: Griffins lounged all around them, inscrutable as cats, brazen as summer. They turned their heads to look at Kes out of fierce, inhuman eyes. Their feathers, ruffled by the wind that came down the mountain, looked like they had been poured out of light; their lion haunches like they had been fashioned out of gold. A white griffin, close at hand, looked like it had been made of alabaster and white marble and then lit from within by white fire. Its eyes were the pitiless blue-white of the desert sky.

I rather enjoyed this book. It was a definite different spin on the world and magic of griffins, but I thought that Neumeier did a great job by painting a beautiful setting, but also in keeping the griffins in a species themselves as opposed to being too close to human nature. I really had no idea what to expect since it was something different than I am used to reading, but I enjoyed the dialogue and the twists and turns. My only annoyance was the main girl Kes. I think we are all used to bold strong eloquent female characters and she was not that at all. It was still a great read and I was totally pulled in. Looking forward to the sequel!

I really enjoyed the first book in this trilogy. Griffins are a creature you just don't see many books about and I liked the idea of a story about them. I will definitely be getting the next two books in the series.
