From Literary Times
When he washes ashore on the Isle of Penance, Morgan St. John is lucky to be alive. His ship was caught in a storm while he was pursuing the French spy-priest Jean-Paul and he was thrown overboard. Before arriving at Penance, Morgan was a man of action-- one who put his work for his country before any woman. But he has completely lost his memory and not only has he forgotten his duty, but even his name! Morgan is rescued from the rocks on the shore by Penelope Fairfax, Mistress of Highcliffe. Pen has a unique gift of prophecy, a gift that might have led to accusations of sorcery had she stayed in England. Instead, she chose to live on Penance and spare her parents the harm that might have come to them if her gift was made public. Highcliffe Castle is Pen's home and she has always been happy there. With her rag-tag group of servants and an adversary to keep her amused, Pen is contented with her life. When she finds Morgan, however, she realizes how lonely she is. Since he doesn't know who he is, Pen calls him Tristan. And Tristan is the man she falls in love with. When a stranger arrives on Penance and claims to be Morgan St. John, Pen doesn't know what to think. The man tells her that Tristan is in fact the French spy he has been looking for. Pen feels betrayed by the man she loves, and Morgan (Tristan) doesn't know what to believe. He is almost certain he is not the terrible person Pen thinks he is. How can he convince Pen when he's not even sure himself? Pen has made it clear that she wants nothing to do with Morgan. The only way to solve the problem is for Morgan to regain his memory. But regaining Pen's love and trust may be the hardest task of all
