In regency Mayfair, London, arranged marriages are common; but Lady Eleanor's hand in marriage is traded in a game of cards by her own father - and lost. The winner is the Earl of Litchfield, a man with scandalous pursuits as his only ambition until he has to face the lady in distress, now his winnings, won in the game of chance which he regrets. How he saves this perilous situation can be a lesson to us all.
