After reading a Victoria Holt novel, I wasn't expecting much from another Gothic author, but oh my! was I in for a surprise. This novel was wonderful! The story line grabbed me and held me throughout. What a complex and enrapturing mystery, with such romance and intrigue. The characters at times could be a little obvious and their dialogue sudden and forced, while the heroine was a little too avant garde during this time period of the 1870s. But there's much more to praise here than not. I read it in two days. I could barely put it down to eat. I've got to read more from Mrs. Warren.
