"The lost land of the title is Nubia, Southern Gateway to Egypt, which is under sentence of death from the rising waters of the High Dam at Aswam, which will reach their maximum level during 1968. For thousands of years, one of the most important regions in the whole of the African Continent, Nubia was battleground of the ancient world. Events that have had a decisive influence on the course of the development of civilization were acted out.

Successive irrigation projects are destroying the antiquities and monuments of this ancient land, and it is ironic that the emergence of Nubia -our knowledge of the archaeology and history of this part of the Nile Valley - is due to its being submerged beneath the waters of these reservoirs. For the periodic threat of destruction has caused the concentration of archaeological researchundertaken at various times.
