Welp, I'm here to tell you, ain't no good writing a dialect novel if you ain't fixin' to tell much of a story with it.
Wellman is highly regarded among fantasists, but I'm going to guess that this is one of the lesser "John the Balladeer" tales--it was underwhelming, sad to say.
