A tender love story about two people who are each dealing with the devastating loss of their spouses and grief of their own. Clark is a young father who has lost his wife and has a very young daughter to care for and raise. Marty, who is a young, expectant widow who has just lost her husband in a tragic accident along the wagon train going West, has no money, no one to help her and nowhere to go. This story shows how they come together in a marriage of convenience, each coming to deal with the grief and end up helping each other out. Clark's strong faith eventually helps Marty to deal with her circumstances and realize that she can have a good life with him and have the family she always wanted. It was a very good book and quick to read.

This is a sweetly-written book about a marriage of convenience that probably happened more than we can imagine. Marty's husband was killed while looking for their horse that had gotten loose overnight. Marty and Clem had just reached the place where they planned to settle, but before Clem claimed his land. Marty is nineteen, homeless and penniless.

The neighbors prepare the body and conduct the burial service. No one really has enough to take Marty in long-term. After the burial, Clark Davis comes to her with a proposal. He needs someone to take care of his two-year-old and Marty needs a home. In shock, Marty agrees to the offer because Clark says that he will pay her way back east in the spring if she wants to go then.

This is a low-key story of two plain farmers trying to do the best they can with what life has sent them.
