In this novelette, set in Paris, the title character is a sly, conniving catalyst bent upon thwarting the romance between an American businessman and her sister-in-law who is estranged from her husband. A real Curella de Ville! The way in which she manipulates both is interesting: alternately shifting their emotions between despair hope. It is typical of the fine writing of Wharton and her excellent character development.
