A long time ago, I bought a book on how to make a living at writing. I don't remember the name. It was horrible. The book spent practically no time on writing or selling. Instead, it talked mainly about where and how to apply for food stamps and other financial aid. Not what I wanted. I threw both the book and my ideas about writing away.

I recently bought a large quantity of books including an entire box of writing books. I've read through a number of these and they seem a bit more optimistic about making a living as a writer. I decided to reconsider my writing ambitions. Although these books are more useful than the previous one, they do lack one essential element - where. As in where to send an article.

I know I want to write non-fiction. I have quite a bit of knowledge on such topics as container gardening, self sufficiency, cooking, etc. And, I'm very good at research. The only magazine I can think of is Mother Earth News. I know there must be others, but I just don't read enough magazines to know what they might be.

Does anyone know of any magazines in any of the areas above? Or ideas for related areas?

Id suggest a book like this http://www.paperbackswap.com/book/details/9781889715353-The+Best+of+the+Magazine+Markets+for+Writers+2007+Best+of+the+Magazine+Markets+for+Writers. Im pretty sure its an updated version of what I have. It lists magazines, their requirements for submissions, whether or not they take unsolicited work, whether or not they take work from freelancers, what they pay, what they look for etc. Its fairly comprehensive.
