Summary:
Every twelve years there is a war between the east and the west. It happens every twelve years because the tide is just right for a land bridge to be revealed and allow for the armies to cross that bridge. It's just about time for the war to begin, so get ready for two years of bloody fights in hopes of political and world control.
My thoughts:
The first 150 pages or so introduces just about everything. There are numerous characters and each one has a particular role and point of view. Also, the land masses are introduced including their history and their political bents. All of this happens within 150 pages. You really need to keep a notebook in order to keep track of all of the "important" players within this section of the book. It's overwhelming. I'm generally a reader of young adult fiction. I rarely cross over into the world of adult literature, but Hair has written some good young adult lit. This made me follow him into his first foray into adult writing. I think it was a miss. Once the action got started (which is about 3/4 of the book through), I was able to see where things were going and making sense of everything. However, I'm still unsure if I would be able to tell you everyone's role in life with the exception of the four main characters that sort of lead the political aspects. I'd suggest Hair offer a quick family tree or something along those lines as a lot of epic fantasy novels do. This will help so readers don't have to flip back and forth to figure out who someone is and why they should be important.
