Touch is the most fundamental of our senses and the parent of all our other senses--seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling. In the human embryo, it develops first. It is so important, in fact, that infants deprived of loving touches often do not survive.
Nor does the power of touch diminish as we mature. Touch is our first language and it remains our most powerful communicator throughout life. Touch is essential to our emotional and sexual lives and has a profound impact on our behavior. It is at once the great stimulator of the central nervous system and the ultimate form of calming reassurance. Tactile experience may be as important to our health and well-being as nutritious food.
