The alternate English title of Maigret a Vichy is Maigret Takes the Waters. This title indicates that the action takes place in the town famous for its medicinal hot springs. Dr Pardon, family friend and physician, has ordered the 53-year-old Chief Superintendent to take a genuine vacation for once in order to dispel giddiness and malaise. Madame M. accompanies him and its nice to see them being a couple, with Madame playing more than a cameo role. One wonders if their marriage was seen as an ideal one by the unhappily married Simenon. Excellent sense of place and characterization of Balzacian types, childish in their naivety and monstrous in their greed and heartlessness. I highly recommend this 1967 novel as one of the superior late Maigret novels. This was translated by Eileen Ellenbogen, who Englished a dozen other Maigret novels.
