Every thing you ever wanted to know in detail about animal sign is here. It gives everything, from in depth analysis of gaits to everything you ever wanted to know about scats and scrapes--it's the most detail intensive book I have seen on the subject. Everything you need to know to decipher more than just the ID, also it's mood, habits, sex etc. Incredible amount of info.

My one issue: this is not a good field guide--it's too hefty to be a reference you carry everywhere. I'd recommend getting a small field guide to mammals in your locality to go along with it. It covers ALL mammals in the Northeast, many of which may not apply to your area and makes the book heavier.

On an interesting note, unlike all the other books I have seen on the subject, this book does not divide the information by species. There is no "coyote" page where you can read up on the coyote. Instead, it's divided with each type of sign having its own chapter. This makes it much more useful when trying to ID a sign you haven't seen before or are unsure of.
