His ... more »innocence is a grand part of the example he sets before them. He would have them also to be holy, harmless, undefined, and separate from sinners, in their new nature, new state, and new life, and therefore he places himself in these characters fully before them. And should not we look to him, and love him, and learn of him ? This is the way for his people to profit in this matter, and to grow into his likeness. It is to look at him in his holiness, and to see themselves and their own impurities in the light of his innocence and purity, until they get them and the spirit of them purged off. His holiness, constantly contemplated by them, is intended by him to be riot only their light to shew, but their law and rule and encouragement to resemble him, so that persevering, they may attain unto it as part of that perfection for which they have been apprehended or laid hold of by him. We should be ever looking at his harmlessness, as a light ever beaming on us, and ever needed by us. We should be ever observing that he never injured any one, even in thought, or desire, or word, or deed ; he was never a hater or an avenger of himself on any one ; he never deceived, or defrauded, or corrupted,or envied another. No one could ever say he had suffered wrong, or cruelty, or slander, or intended provocation, at his hand. He was wronged, yet never resented the wrong. He was the object of hatred, but he never hated. He was constantly harmless, while he was as constantly enduring harm.
