I obtained this from a PBS member for the shelf at the old soldiers' home. It is the book club edition so apparently it had considerable sales. The author's photograph depicts a respectable gent. The photos are captioned, for example: "The body of Salvatore Maranzano. 'wartime leader' during the Castellamarese War in America, 1930-31. Upon his death, I assumed his mantle."
Mr. Bonanno offers thumbnail descriptions as he introduces a great many Italians and shares his insights in a succinct manner. "Frank Costello was a man of stature, with contacts at every level of society. In his lifetime, he dealt with such people as New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and Louisiana Senator Huey Long. Frank maintained, and I have no reason to doubt it, that during Prohibition he and Joe Kennedy of Boston were partners in the liquor business."
